江戸時代はこの辺りが愛子宿場の中心で人や物資の往来も盛んでした。 郵便制度が国の主導で明治4年に開始され、宮城地区では一番早く（明治７年(1874)12月16日）に、 ここ加藤忠四郎(初代局長)宅に、愛子郵便御用取扱所が設けられました。 玄関先に馬を繋ぐスペースが広く取られていたという話があり、 当時は馬や馬車及び徒歩での移動や配達がメインだったことがうかがい知れます。
